Depression

“Great, thanks for asking”, but inside you feel hollow and gloomy.

It’s as if you are watching your life, completely detached from yourself and others. You wake up, you stumble through your day and you go to bed. Your weeks have little hope and no texture. There is nothing to look forward to, no end in sight.

Depression Feels Like…

  • You are more pessimistic and negative than you would like to be
  • Taking a shower and other regular activities feel like a chore
  • You have trouble enjoying activities you used to love
  • Irritation and frustration rise in you very easily
  • You can’t seem to get enough sleep

You say “I’m tired”, but this isn’t the tiredness everyone feels after a hard day’s work. This is a state of permanent exhaustion that sleep does not fix. In this state, you can’t get enough sleep to feel refreshed. You wake up more dull and exhausted than the day before.You sleep to escape. You live just to get back to bed so that you can escape.

You might be drinking more, smoking more or eating more comfort food just to feel some comfort and give yourself a break from these empty feelings. You are spending more time alone because it’s too hard to get dressed and put on your plastic smile and pretend that everything is okay.

You know you are not any fun to be around and your unhappiness is making others concerned and miserable. What can they do? They are sympathetic to a point, but enough already. You don’t have a broken arm or something visible you can point to that explains the way you feel. So you feel pressure to feel better or be better, but you just don’t. The more you pretend, the more disconnected you feel.

Sometimes the idea of asking for help, admitting you have a problem, is unfeasible. Saying the words out loud is a step you can’t imagine you will ever be ready to take.
